Turkish Twitter Users Arrested

This past week, Turkish authorities arrested 25 protesters for their use of Twitter!  In an attempt to combat violent protests and clashes currently taking place in the embattled country, police officers rounded up the 25 protestors, their crime being “spreading untrue information.”  


In what seems like a war against Twitter, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s Prime Minister, has called social media “the worst menace to society.”  Of Twitter, he believes that “the example of lies can be found there.”  In a country where the media is government-controlled, social media has been a valuable outlet for Turkish protestors to connect and to express themselves.  Even the hacking community has joined in–Anonymous and the Syrian Electronic Army have targeted Turkish government websites.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out–one has to wonder how the Turkish government plans on controlling social media and punishing protestors who are online.  Is it…
